For the first time, France's Macron calls 1944 killings of West African troops by French as massacre
- By MONIKA PRONCZUK and SYLVIE CORBET - Associated Press
France's President Emmanuel Macron has for the first time recognized the killing of West African soldiers by the French Army in 1944 as a massacre. The recognition came Thursday in a letter addressed to Senegalese authorities. Between 35 and 400 West African soldiers who fought in the World War II Battle of France in 1940 were killed on Dec. 1, 1944 by French soldiers after what the French described as a mutiny over unpaid wages. The West Africans were members of a corps of colonial infantry in the French Army. Senegal's president said he hopes Macron's letter will help “open the door” so that the “whole truth about this painful event” can finally come out.

Israel's Maccabi Tel Aviv plays soccer game without incident in Hungary after Amsterdam violence
- Associated Press
Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv’s game against Besiktas in the Europa League has been played without incident before empty stands in Hungary, with the stadium closed to fans over security concerns following attacks on Israeli supporters in Amsterdam this month. Maccabi won the game 3-1 on a cold and rainy evening in Debrecen, Hungary’s second-largest city. Groups of police patrolled outside the stadium but security levels did not appear overwhelming in the city of around 200,000 residents. The Thursday match was Maccabi’s first in Europe since its fans were assaulted in the Netherlands on Nov. 7 in attacks that were condemned as antisemitic by authorities in Israel and across Europe.

His comments continue a split between the drivers and the FIA this season both over a rapid turnover of key officials and other issues, like a push to punish drivers for swearing. Russell’s comments followed a report by the BBC that two more officials had left suddenly ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix.

New Mexico appeals court upholds rule aimed at curbing ozone pollution
- AP
The New Mexico Court of Appeals has upheld state regulations aimed at cracking down on emissions from the oil and natural gas industry. The case centered on a rule adopted in 2022 that called for curbing the pollutants that react with heat and sunlight to create ground-level ozone. The Independent Petroleum Association of New Mexico argued that the rule disproportionately affected independent operators in what is one of the nation's top producing states. The group is considering its legal options. Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham's administration says regulations to curb emissions from the industry were properly developed and supported with evidence.

Now, many of those who are going back are finding that their homes and businesses have been destroyed. Who will pay for the reconstruction is unclear. One of Denmark’s largest cellphone networks suffered severe outages Thursday that prevented people from contacting emergency services, forced at least one hospital to reduce non-critical medical care, and prompted security services in some regions to patrol the streets in search of people in need to help. Danish media said trains and buses in parts of the country also suffered delays due to signaling issues. Danish intelligence agencies could not confirm if the two incidents were related.

First-year coach Brian Callahan says he sees the quarterback taking a different approach to playing the position. The result is Levis being more efficient even with room for improvement.
